WCWM 90.7 PRESENTS - THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

On 13 December 2001 (12:00-15:00), I took William and Mary - at point under stress from exams and filling with anticipation to leave for a few weeks - on a trippy journey through Pumpkinland. Thirty-three songs (fans know why I chose that number) were handpicked by me from nearly every release the Smashing Pumpkins - Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzsky and Jimmy Chamberlin - put out in their twelve-year history. The goal was to give the listener a sense of who the Pumpkins were from the casual to the faithfully devoted follower.

Of course, the challenge with the Pumpkins is choosing the right songs since their output comes out to (maybe) an Aeroplane Flies High box set released for every year of their existence as a band. Aside from the usual radio staples - 1979, Perfect and Cherub Rock - I try to choose from obscure ones as well including "Silverfuck," "Eye" and selections from both MACHINA II and their latest "Judas O" disc from their greatest hits package Rotten Apples. I even chose the often controversial "Pastichio Medley," the 23 minute pastiche representing about 70 different songs that weren't developed [and the reason for choosing that was for educational purposes as well as the fact that I do enjoy it].
